Navigating the middle of life and leadership | Travis Gale | TEDxDurban
The Middle is where human beings are truly made. It's easy to show up at the start line, energised by the excitement of new beginnings, and we all love the thrill of celebrating a finish. But it's the Middle where our stories unfold, where challenges are overcome, and where endurance is built. In this presentation you will discover transformative insights designed to encourage and equip you for life's most challenging stretches. Whether in life or leadership, The Middle is the terrain that demands resilience and grit.
The Middle Insights will encourage you to:Keep going when your motivation fades and quitting seems easier.
Refuel from your own story, tapping into the power of your personal experiences.
Protect your perspective to cultivate the right emotions in difficult times.
Navigate your context with intention, moving forward strategically rather than letting circumstances dictate your path.
Embrace detours with agility and openness, turning unexpected challenges into opportunities for growth.
Collaborate with your tribe, knowing that no great journey is made alone.
Leverage failures, transforming them into stepping stones that propel you toward success rather than holding you back.Drawing from his experience in ultra-endurance races, Travis connects the mental and emotional endurance required in these extreme challenges with the day-to-day choices we face. This talk will inspire you to not only survive The Middle but to thrive in it, ensuring that you run your race with purpose and finish well. Travis was born and raised in Durban. During 1999, the year after he finished school, he rode a bicycle 17000km across four continents, raising R1.7 million for children living with and affected by HIV / AIDS. On that tour he wrote a vision for an organisation called Appletree, a brand which would enable human potential. In 2004, after studying HR at UKZN, he lived and worked as an underwater videographer and dive professional on Koh Phi Phi Island in Thailand. After experiencing the devastating Tsunami, he returned home with a renewed fervour to activate his vision. For the past 20 years he has been developing the Appletree brand, partnering with many organisations to shape and sustain a healthy culture. In 2020 he published The Middle, a book which was written to encourage individuals and teams to navigate tough terrain and achieve ambitious goals. Through The Middle brand, he expresses his current passion; learning about and sharing on the topic of grit and resilience, drawing from 20 years of entrepreneurship, 4 decades of living in KZN, 15 years of marriage, 10 years of parenting two daughters, and his current goal of running ten 100 mile trail races of which he has completed six. - 12:30The power of yes for unlocking your full potential | Maria Maier | TEDxClinton Central SchoolWhat if one powerful “YES” could change the entire trajectory of your life? In this motivating talk, Maria Maier explores how unlocking your full potential might start with something surprisingly simple: embracing the power of YES. Through personal stories of resilience and transformation—including the pivotal moment when one “YES” altered her life forever—Maria shows us how belief, action, and success are all rooted in the psychology of affirmation. Drawing from research by Dr. Robert Cialdini and the neuroscience of commitment and mindset, she reveals how small daily "YESes" build unstoppable momentum. From the grit of entrepreneurs like Jamie Kern Lima to the science behind micro-decisions, Maria teaches us that saying “YES” isn’t just a choice—it’s a strategy. One that fuels growth, builds confidence, and forges a future defined by possibility, not limitation. “The world isn’t changed by people who wait for permission,” she reminds us. “It’s changed by those who believe, achieve, and succeed—one YES at a time.” Maria Maier embodies resilience and determination. Born in Russia, she learned the value of hard work from her parents during challenging times. Starting her career in city government, Maria led housing initiatives that helped families afford homes. After immigrating to the U.S., she spent over a decade in education before founding her company, Step Up & Thrive. Now a dynamic coach and trainer, Maria equips leaders, teams, and organizations to grow and succeed. She has trained with world-renowned experts like leadership guru John Maxwell, business coach Paul Martinelli, and influence pioneer Dr. Robert Cialdini. Maria’s passion lies in helping people believe in themselves, set bold goals, and take action. As President of the CNY BizTalkers Club and a leader in the Mohawk Valley Businesswomen Network, Maria champions the idea that leadership is a mindset, not a title. - 3:58Comics Made Me a Reader (and I’m Not Sorry) | Angelo Gaetano | TEDxClinton Central SchoolWhat if the smartest thing you read today… had pictures in it? In this heartfelt and eye-opening talk, 13-year-old Angelo Gaetano challenges everything you think you know about comic books. With humor, insight, and a lifelong love of Calvin and Hobbes, Angelo walks us through his personal journey—from flipping through his sister’s Sunday funnies to discovering the depth, poetry, and philosophy hiding in the panels of his favorite comics. But then, something changed. Angelo realized not everyone was allowed to read comics. Some parents and teachers dismissed them as “not real books.” That realization sparked a mission. Through personal anecdotes and surprising science, Angelo makes a powerful case: comics aren’t just real books—they’re brain-boosting, empathy-building, laughter-filled experiences that connect words with images, heart with humor, and readers with each other. Backed by research showing how comics improve memory retention and engage more parts of the brain, this talk isn’t just for fans of graphic novels—it’s for anyone who’s ever been told that what they love to read doesn’t “count.” Angelo Gaetano is a 13-year-old student at Clinton Middle School who loves chess, nature, animals, art, and being funny. When he isn't outside, he can be found reading or playing chess. Angelo was inspired to give a TED Talk because he believes that comics are important to education. His talk, titled “Comics Made Me a Reader (and I’m Not Sorry)”, explores the importance of reading and discovering comics for what they are. - 3:15When They Erase Books, They Erase People Too | Beatrice Kelly | TEDxClinton Central SchoolWhat happens when we start erasing books from our shelves? We risk erasing the people behind them. In this passionate and eye-opening talk, young advocate Beatrice Kelly takes us into the heart of one of today’s most pressing issues: book banning. With wisdom beyond her years, she asks a powerful question—What if someone decided your story didn’t matter? Beatrice reveals the staggering truth: in just one year, over 10,000 books were banned in schools. But this isn’t just about books—it’s about silencing perspectives, marginalizing identities, and narrowing the lens through which we view the world. Through heartfelt storytelling and sharp insight, Beatrice challenges us to imagine our favorite book being taken away—not because we lost it, but because someone else said it didn’t belong. Her message is clear: Books aren’t dangerous. Censorship is. Beatrice Kelly is a 13-year-old student at Clinton Middle School who enjoys reading, writing, and listening to music. When she isn’t reading, she can be found writing and listening to music. Beatrice was inspired to give a TED Talk because she thinks banning books is wrong. As it tells others that their stories aren’t important, she believes her story and ideas can help others. Her talk, titled “When They Erase Books, They Erase People Too”, explores how book banning is wrong because it tells others that their stories do not deserve to be heard. - 2:41You Are Never Truly Alone | Blake Pflanz | TEDxClinton Central SchoolWhat if feeling alone wasn’t a dead end, but a starting point? In this heartfelt and compassionate talk, Blake explores the quiet moments of loneliness that many of us face—and reframes them as invitations to connect. From the simple act of thinking about someone you care about to sparking conversation in unexpected places, Blake reminds us that we are more connected than we think. Drawing on personal stories, including a childhood moment on a buddy bench that became a turning point, this talk offers a deeply human approach to building connection—one thought, one person, one step at a time. Whether it’s imagining someone you love or saying hello to a stranger, you can find your place in the world by simply reaching out. Because sometimes, the first step to feeling less alone is realizing you never truly were. Blake Pflanz is a 12-year-old student at Clinton Middle School who loves football, track, and cross-country.
